Dr. Lee Hancock discusses our highly successful college prep program:

Neusport Football Club’s “All-Around Performance Program” (AP²) can be called a college preparation program, but that is only part of the picture. With our program we set out to create something unique from other programs that would not only provide our student athletes with advice, preparation and help with the process of getting into college, but also with the skills and preparedness that will help them succeed once they are there. In short, AP2’s combination of college preparation and life skills programs are designed to strengthen the “all-around” student-athlete through development of the educational as well as psychological skills necessary for success in soccer and in life.

The program was created and is implemented by Dr. Lee Hancock, a professor at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Los Angeles. Dr. Hancock has created numerous programs for youth athletes and has helped hundreds of student-athletes prepare to be successful college student-athletes. Dr. Lee is supported in his program by Neusport’s own expert staff and guest visitors including professional and college athletes who have been through the things that our Neusport athletes are now facing. Topics include:

7th and 8th graders: introduce student athletes to the program, create a profile, begin to discuss college and “what is out there for them.”

Freshmen: introduce student athletes to the college recruiting process, set realistic expectations for student-athletes, provide a checklist for families in order for them to prepare themselves for the process.

Sophomores: student-athletes and their families will receive all freshman services as well as information regarding how to effectively select a college, how to communicate with coaches through letter writing, and how to tactically embark on the recruiting process.

Juniors: student-athletes and their families will receive all pertinent freshman and sophomore information as well as information on how to communicate with colleges and coaches, SAT prep course, how to get and stay organized, how to find and qualify for academic and athletic scholarships and how to register for the clearinghouse and take their first SAT/ACT.

Seniors: student-athletes and their families will learn how to select and prepare for college visits, stay in communication with schools, complete the college selection process and participate in discussions that will prepare them for the demands of their first year of college (i.e. time management, quality study habits for college student-athletes, etc…).

For all ages, emphasis is placed throughout the program on real-life lessons that will help our players far beyond their time with Neusport and far beyond the field. This invaluable program is provided free-of-charge to all U12 through U18 Neusport club members. Specific topics and schedule will be released in August and the program will begin in September.

In addition to the college readiness portion of AP2, this year we will also be implementing a mental skills development program covering such topics as…

Setting and reaching goals
PK success
Mental toughness
Getting and staying motivated
Getting and staying focused
Creating routines
Dealing and thriving under pressure
Seeing is believing – Imagery
Building confidence
